Last-action try sinks Wharfedale
Cambridge 33 Wharfedale 32
For the second away match in succession, Wharfedale suffered the frustration of conceding a last-action try, this time resulting in a 33-32 defeat at Cambridge.
The first half belonged to Cambridge, who led, at one point, by 25-3. The second half was Wharfedale's as they led 27-25 with ten minutes left.
The Blues were back in front with a penalty success after a rare attack but, in the second minute of injury time, a driven try from a line-out, claimed by Oliver Renton, looked to have secured a full five-point haul for the ecstatic Dalesmen.
In the final added minute Cambridge, outplayed virtually throughout the half, grabbed the clinching try by sub back Phil Reed.
Consolation in defeat for the Dalesmen was two bonus points, which, combined with Otley's win at Henley, lifts Wharfedale six points clear of relegation.
Also new signing Sam Stitcher had an impressive debut at open-side flanker.
Andy Baggett's penalty and a brilliantly-taken Adam Whaites try gave the Greens hope in the first half.
Whaites' second try in the 46th minute, converted by Baggett, made it 25-15 and now it was all Wharfedale.
Hooker Gavin Hindle (59), from a driven line-out, and substitute centre Mark Bedworth (71) added tries - the latter superbly converted by Baggett - to edge ahead by two points. But Gareth Cull's third penalty led to the frantic finale.
