WE must have made last week's Craven Curiosities too easy - as we had a host of correct answers.

The object was a weighing scale - or, to give it its proper name, a pocket balance scale.

Successful guesses came from Pamela Wilcock, Maureen Batty, Bryan Capstick, Cath Cooney, Jean Brown, David Henderson, Phyllis Capstick, Brenda Wood, Anne Lindsay, Jonathan Mosley, Sally Floyd, Marjorie Robinson and David Heather.

Many of them suggested uses for the scale - from weighing fish and feed to weighing babies and luggage!

Experts from Craven Museum and Gallery tell us: "The mystery object is a set of pocket balance scales. This is operated by a spring with a bronze on the face of the scales.

"The scales are measured in pounds ranging from 0-25lbs. It consists of rusted metal and measures 185mm in length. A ring is at the top with a grey metal hook at the back.

"It was manufactured by Carnos."

All items featured in this column can be viewed at the Craven District Council-run museum which is located at Skipton Town Hall. It is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

Meanwhile, we are inviting guesses about this week’s mystery object. Suggestions can be emailed to news@cravenherald.co.uk, to arrive no later than noon on Monday.
