CONGRATULATIONS go to Mary Slater, who correctly identified last week's Craven Curiosities.
She said it was a cigar piercer or punch.
And she took us to task on the previous week's curiosity. "You didn't mention that the knob on the end of a draughting pen was used to smooth the paper again after an error had been scratched out," she says.
Experts at Craven Museum and Gallery describe this week's mystery object as "a retractable cigar piercer or bullet punch, which is used to cut a hole in the cigar cap and create an opening through which the person can smoke.
"The piercer is 75mm in length and 10mm in diameter and its outer case is made of metal. There is an inscription on the outer case reading crump cream crackers patent no 6958 made in Austria."
All items featured in this column can be viewed at the Craven District Council-run museum which is located at Skipton Town Hall. It is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 4pm.
