THIS week, we bring you another railway walk - a 3.9-mile moderate stroll from Wennington to Bentham.

It passes ancient mining sites and an historic hall, before descending to the peaceful riverbank and heading up stream to Bentham, with its traditional shops, inns and cafés.

It is one of 12 walks, linking adjacent stations between Heysham and Skipton, which have been produced by the Leeds-Morecambe Community Rail Partnership (CRP) and the Lancaster and Skipton Rail User Group (LASRUG).

The concept was devised by Gerald Townson, with the walks compiled by Stuart Ballard.

Step by step

Leave station through car park. Turn left out of car park and left again over rail bridge, and follow Old Moor Road up hill. Follow road round to left and see Ingleborough directly ahead in the distance. Continue along this road past tracks to Blands (L) and East View (R). At footpath sign turn left into Perries Farm drive entrance and follow track down and turn right along grassy area that runs between twin garages (L) and barn (R). Cross stile at end to left, on the left of a big oak tree, and follow the hedge (L) down to the bottom of field. Follow the hedge (L) around to the right at the bottom and keep alongside as it turns left and down to a field gate and a U-shaped concrete stile. Cross stile and veer slightly right, cross field towards a big tree and go through a bridle gate in the hedge.

Turn right and head towards the right side of Greenfold farm buildings. Go through field gate and farm buildings, keeping poly-tunnel on right, and follow track through yard and veer left through bridle gate marked ‘FP’ (L) into field with new house to right. Veer right after house and cross field to two-step stile, another one on the left of a field gate, and a third one that leads to a footbridge crossing the top of the wooded gully descending to left. Turn up left at the end of the footbridge and follow the path way-markers through the top of the wood to another step stile and a length of protected barbed wire. Cross both into a field and walk beside the hedge (L) towards Robert Hall.

Cross a step-stile and veer right up a grassy track to Robert Hall. Just before a field gate into the garden area, veer left and go through a gap in the hedge, veer left and go through a gate in the left-hand corner (Hall to right). Turn right across the grass and turn left along the track and exit the complex. Along this track, come to a cattle grid. Go through the left gate and cross the big field diagonally, heading for the right end of Ingleborough. Descending this field, pass through broken tree line, cross hedge and ditch and veer slight right again to a stile into wood, a short way up from the bottom corner of the field. Cross stile and turn right and follow path down wooden steps through wood to footbridge crossing Eskew Beck just before it flows into the River Wenning (L).

At tarmac road turn left downhill, and turn right over stile at the left gatepost of the second gate on the right. Turn right along hedge and ditch (R), cross two step stiles, and turn left up fence (L) towards Cloudsbank. Go round the right end of the buildings and in front of the house and go down hedge (L) through two field gates to road and footpath sign. Cross road and stile, and go into the wood. Follow the path along the top of the wood and back down to the riverside. View weir (L), before crossing wall stile into next field. Follow riverbank, cross short bridge and second wall stile. Continue along riverbank, view River Wenning waterfall and Wenning Oak (L), before crossing beck and a wall stile. Keep left and follow fence/hedge (L) until it drops sharply into a hollow.

Turn left through a kissing gate and follow the path along the edge of caravan park to the next kissing gate. Turn right down tarmac road and go straight ahead to main building complex. Turn left at Reception (L) and head for bridge. Just before bridge follow public footpath sign to right through hedge, down some flags and a smaller road between homes. Continue straight on at end, just before the road turns right, and cross grass, cross wall stile, veer left and turn right through kissing gate. Veer left and follow path by river. Turn left across footbridge, and turn right along path through wood. Join caravan park entrance road and veer left. Turn left at main road and cross the River Wenning bridge. Continue uphill to Bentham station, shops and services.
