DAVID Gooch (Fact NHS is in crisis is undeniable, Craven Herald letters, December 29) makes a strong case in pointing to the Government’s role in the current NHS pay crisis.
It is also important to note that data from the Office for National Statistics shows that from January 2020 to October 2022, private sector pay rose by 6.9 per cent compared to 2.7 per cent in the public sector, while inflation went up by 11.1per cent.
In November Rolls Royce Motor Cars, whose business depends on retaining a skilled workforce, agreed an across the board increase of 10 per cent plus bonuses, linked to the current rate of inflation. No strike action was involved.
As well as the Government not understanding the concept of negotiation, they also seem unable to learn lessons from those in the private sector who understand the need to retain qualified staff by paying them at a fair negotiated rate based on the cost of living.
