A PERFORMANCE by a string quintet will kick off the new season for Concert and Cakes at All Saints Church in Burton-in-Lonsdale in October.

Concert and Cakes is an hour of music by musicians from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester followed by an invitation to meet the performers afterwards, whilst enjoying homemade cakes, tea and coffee.

The 2018/2019 season will begin at 2.30pm on Saturday, October 20, with the Vassallo String Quintet performing Dvorak’s String Quintet No 2 in G major, Op 77 and Boccherini’s String Quintet in C major, G349.

A spokesman for Concert and Cakes said: “Join us for this rare opportunity to hear the imposing, lush and lyrical string quintet in G major by Antonin Dvorak.

“The string instrument that turns a quartet into a quintet varies with each composer or work; Mozart added a viola, Schubert, a cello. Most string quintets feature one or the other.

“Unusually, Dvořák chose the double bass, selecting an instrument we have only heard once before at Concert and Cakes.

“The breadth and range of sound is notable in this lush quintet producing a rich and beautiful sound.”

Admission is free, and although no ticket is required, there will be a retiring collection.

In addition to the October event, Concert and Cakes will host a concert on Saturday, November 17, featuring a brass quintet.

The spokesman added: “We welcome the fabulous Cobalt Brass, winners of the 2018 Royal Northern College of Music International Chamber Music Ensemble of the Year Award, with a mix of brass music classics, jazz and pop.”
