A community operatic project featuring youngsters aged from four to 18 will come alive in Skipton on Friday, when more than 120 people will unite for a one-off performance of Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute.

The project, which is part of the North Yorkshire Youth Music Action Zone (NYMAZ) programme, funded by Youth Music, will bring together several groups and local professional orchestra, Skipton Build-ing Society Camerata, for a performance at Skipton Girls’ High School.

It will be the culmination of eight weeks of workshops, which have looked at the core music skills of listening, composing and performing.

Each workshop has worked on a short excerpt of The Magic Flute, which has been altered and abridged by the young participants.

However, when performed in order, the pieces – interspersed with music – will tell the story of the opera.

The performance will also feature students from Brooklands Special School in Skipton who have taken part in workshops involving movement, singing and costume-making.

Skipton Camerata’s artistic director Ben Crick said: “The Magic Flute project is a chance for local schools to join together to join five professional singers and the orchestra to perform an abridged version of the show.

“It will be a unique opportunity for pupils from mainly rural backgrounds to work on an opera with the full support of a professional cast.

“We expect around 120 pupils to be involved in the workshops and 60 to take part in the performance.”

The concert starts at 6pm and tickets cost £2 on the door.
