Craven artists are taking part in the 2012 North Yorkshire Open Studios.

Visitors will be able to explore the studios, which range from blacksmith’s forges and farmyard studios to stone cottages and suburban living rooms.

“This is a great opportunity to seek out hidden gems,” said a spokesman for the event, which runs over two weekends – June 9 and 10 and June 16 and 17.

Locally, David Ashby, Heather and David Cook and Carinne Brosse will be displaying pottery, prints, constructions and collages at Courtyard Pottery, Grassington, while elsewhere in the village jeweller Katie Denby will be at The Anvil Gallery and painters Jacquie Denby and Val Emmerson will welcome visitors at Scar Lodge.

In Cononley, visitors have the chance to see the work of four artists: Gilly Craven, who uses fabrics, yarns, paper and paint to create textile pieces; Helen Slinger, who draws on the landscape and the region’s textile history for her greetings cards; Barbara Greene, who mixes artistic and scientific references in her installations; and Janet Browne, who creates three-dimensional scenes using padded, hand-dyed fabrics.

Forged stags, stallions and beasts created by Andrew Kay can be viewed at Austwick Hall, while in Malham blacksmith Annabelle Bradley’s work includes functional ironwork ornamented with hand-forged rams’ heads, shepherds’ crooks, tapers and twists.

The Art Depot at Gargrave will host two workshops – a pinhole camera workshop with Steve Rayner next Sunday, June 10, and a hat-making workshop with Sue Carter on Sunday, June 17.

There will also be a tea party in Malhamdale on Saturday, June 16, with the venue remaining a secret until people book their places. Other artists taking part are: Airton – Karen Griffiths and Beverley Ann Hicks; Giggleswick – Frank Gordon; Langcliffe – Margaret Uttley and Sarah Smith; Lothersdale – Nicole Dickinson; Malham – Katherine Holmes and Susan Parker; Settle – Gary Fitch; Skipton – Caroline Hird-Rogers and Ailsa Lewer; Skyreholme – Helen Peyton; Thornton-in-Craven – Annwyn Dean, Elizabeth Shorrock, Fiona Bowley and Jackie Hunt; Threshfield – Terry Logan.

Organiser Christine Keogh said: “Open Studios offers a unique opportunity for the public to meet individual artists in a diverse range of studios and settings, to gain an insight into how their work is produced, what inspires them and to buy high quality art and craft directly from them.”

Studios will open from 10.30am to 5.30pm. For more details, visit nyos.org.uk or ring (01756) 748529.
