Polly English (Lib Dem): Polly has been a county councillor for eight years as well as serving on the town and district councils.

She says: “Actions speak louder than words. My record of attendance and achievements are second to none – 100 per cent attendance at meetings last year and only one meeting missed the year before. However it’s not just about attending meetings. I have fought (and won) for many issues in the area including two anti-flooding initiatives – one large (Coach Street) and one small (Grassington Road) – and the resurfacing of Carleton New Road and the back streets in Broughton Road. A successful anti-dog fouling campaign is up and running.

"I am currently dealing with the sequence of traffic lights on Keighley Road, pigeon problems under railway bridges, canal footpath/lighting and the restoration of the Skipton-Harrogate bus service. This proven record shows actions not promises.”

Peter Madeley (Lab): Peter has lived in the Skipton West ward for 30 years. A family man, he understands the everyday challenges affecting the whole community in these tough times. He is deeply concerned about the effects public spending cuts will have on the town.

He has a wide range of relevant experience and is fully aware of the key issues affecting local people and is committed to working hard for the people of Skipton. “I believe in listening to individuals and community groups in an open and inclusive way. Ratepayers need to feel reassured that budgets and resources are being managed efficiently; putting consultation, transparency and accountability at the heart of all decisions. I will ensure that protecting the most vulnerable individuals in our community is a priority. The residents of Skipton deserve a better deal.”

Fiona Protheroe (Green): Fiona was brought up in Skipton and returned three years ago as she wanted her three young children to have the same opportunity as she did. She is an active member of the Skipton community, involved in schools, improving Aireville Park and in fair trade projects.

Before returning to Skipton, she worked for a county council on ways to build stronger communities and improve quality of life for residents. She is concerned about the global impact of local actions and worked for CARE Inter-national UK supporting families devastated by natural disasters.

She says: “I’m passionate about the sustainability of Skipton, for my children and future generations. I am concerned about over-development, loss of town centres and how we deal with climate change. I would love to represent Skipton West and help keep North Yorkshire as a great place to live now and in the future.”

Andy Solloway (Ind): Andy is 48, married, has two teenage children, runs Sollophonic Guitars and has been a district councillor for 11 years. As a parent, small-business owner and Skipton resident, he knows and understands the pressures and issues that people have in their everyday lives, and has the energy, the wisdom and the experience to independently represent all of West Division on North Yorkshire County Council.

He says: “As an independent, free from party political allegiances, I would work with the council when their policies benefit Skipton and fight them when they don’t. I have and will always use my independence and put you first. The three main political parties have let this country and county down, it is time for an independent force in local government, free from interference or influence. It is time for Skipton and Craven to have a larger slice of the North Yorkshire cake.”

Paul Whitaker (Cons): Paul has lived in Skipton most of his life and taken an active part, acting as a town and Craven district councillor as well as serving on many voluntary committees, all involved in Skipton’s growth, preservation and well-being. He says: “I genuinely care and am concerned that Skipton voices its complaints and needs to North Yorkshire County Council who control among other things, education, highways and social services.

“Residents can be assured that I will continue to raise your issues until NYCC listens and will work hard to be your elected representative offering my time and commitment to you honestly, fairly and with an open mind regardless of politics.”
