A film shot in the Yorkshire Dales has scooped two more awards at international film festivals.

Lad: A Yorkshire Story – written and directed by former Austwick man Dan Hartley – was named best feature film at the Mexico International Film Festival held in Mexico City last weekend. That award follows on from a second best actor accolade awarded to the film’s young star, 15-year-old Bretten Lord, of Settle.

Bretten, a pupil at Settle College, was named best child actor at the Hollywood International Family Festival last month. As Dan and Bretten were unable to fly out to Hollywood to collect the prize, one of their former teachers, Jean Lonsdale, who was on holiday in California at the time, collected it for them.

Jean, of Langcliffe, said: “It was certainly an experience. When I realised the film was to be showing in Hollywood, whilst I was still in California, I offered to go.

“Dan, an ex-Duke of Edinburgh student of mine, asked if I would be able to go to the presentation. I was extremely honoured.”

Dan was particularly proud that Bretten had scooped another award.

He said: “When I discovered Bretten at an open casting call advertised in the Craven Herald, I knew that I'd discovered a real talent. Not only is he a fantastic actor, he’s got charisma.”

The film scooped four awards at the Houston WorldFest in April, including best film and Bretten’s best actor award, and Lad was named the best film at the Anchorage Film Festival in December. It is to be screened at the Munich Film Festival in early July and following its release at the Plaza in Skipton earlier this year Lad is now being shown in all 15 UK national parks.

It will be shown in Goole tomorrow and is set to be screened at the Grassington Festival on Friday, June 21.
