The panorama around Chelker Reservoir has taken on a new look.

Utility company Kelda has removed four old 45-metre high wind turbines which had stood on the site between Addingham and Draughton for the past two decades.

The work – which took place at the end of last week – comes after Kelda made unsuccessful attempts to obtain permission for much larger turbines.

“The site looks incredible without the turbines,” said Catherine Leigh, who lives at nearby East Berwick Farm. “It is absolutely wonderful.”

Mrs Leigh, who is a member of Parishioners Against Chelker Turbines (PACT), added: “It’s been a David and Goliath battle – at least that’s what it’s felt like. Seeing the turbines come down made me realise that sometimes the little people do win the battle.

“I’ve got to say we have had massive support from many people, local councillors, PACT and English Heritage. Many put themselves out to help and we owe our thanks to so many. I am so relieved and thankful that we can put it behind us.”

A spokesman for Kelda said all the above-ground works had been completed and the remaining materials, including access tracks, would be removed in the spring when conditions were more favourable.
