SENIOR students at South Craven School will take part in a mock election, being held to stir up interest in politics and democracy.

The school is hoping the initiative will encourage pupils to exercise their right to vote once they are old enough.

A spokesman for South Craven said: "We are seeking to interest our sixth form students , many of whom will have the vote on May 7, to exercise their right to vote.

"Political education is taken seriously in the school, and head of humanities Dave Phillips will be organising a mock election, when sixth formers representing the four main parties will canvass throughout the school.

"The student candidates seeking votes from their fellow pupils are: Emily Wood, Conservative, Emma Holmes, Green, Ben Farrah, Labour and Chi Hirst, UKIP.

"At the end of the day, anything that encourages people to think about how they are governed and by whom must be good."

She added that the official prospective parliamentary candidates for five main parties in the Skipton and Ripon Constituency would be coming into the school to meet older students.
