Barnoldswick Rotary Club: Barnoldswick and Earby Rotarians watched a fascinating film covering the lives and habits of birds of prey, ranging from owls and sparrowhawks in secluded valleys in the Bowland Fells to goshawks and golden eagles in Scotland. It was a truly outstanding film show.

Bolton Abbey Priory Church: The services on Sunday are 8am Communion (said), 10.30am Sung Eucharist and 6.30pm Evening Prayer. As this is the first Sunday of the month, there is also a liquid family service at 9.15am. This is a fun service for children of all ages.

Organ recital: Kevin Bowyer, described as the outstanding organist of his generation, will perform at the first of a new organ recital series at Bolton Priory on Sunday from 3.30pm to 4.30pm. There will be a retiring collection.

Pilgrimage: The Two Parishes Pilgrimage will take place next Sunday afternoon, May 10. Priory members will join parishioners from neighbouring Embsay in retracing the journey, or as much of it as they feel able to, of the Augustinian Canons who travelled from Embsay to Bolton in 1154 to re-found their religious community in more sheltered pastures by the River Wharfe. The pilgrimage will end with a Songs of Praise in the Priory at 4.30pm. There will be two joining points: St Mary’s, Embsay, at 1.30 pm and Billy Bob’s Ice Cream Parlour at 2.45 pm.

Village show: The 35th Bolton Abbey Show will be held in Bolton Abbey Village Hall next Saturday, May 9, at 2pm. Refreshments will be available.

Wednesday Nighters: John and Rita Bennett will present an illustrated talk on The History and Welcome of Assisi at Wednesday’s meeting in the village hall. It will start at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome. Entrance is free and a raffle is held to cover the costs. This is the last meeting of the season and sessions will restart in September.

Burnsall Ed Williams, 01756 720335 Charities Day: St Wilfrid’s, Burnsall, will host its annual Charities Day on Bank Holiday Monday. The event runs from noon to 4pm on Burnsall Village Green. St Wilfrid’s will be running a duck race at 3.30pm and other attractions will include children’s races, pet show, cake and produce stall, egg throwing, a bouncy castle and the ever-popular Young Farmers’ ducking stool. Many charities will have stalls and there will be entertainment will be from the Lee Whitworth Band. Entrance is free. St Wilfrid’s is appealing for cakes and produce for its stall and donations can be delivered from 10am on the day. Also, more volunteers are needed to man the stalls and help sell duck race tickets. Campaign film: Online campaigning group 38 Degrees Skipton will show the film, Sell Off, at Carleton Village Hall on Tuesday at 7.15pm. The one-hour film tells the story of the quiet changes taking place to our health service. There will be free entry.

Clapham Rory-Joe Daniels, 015242 51135 School news: Clapham School’s Gabriel Williams took part in the National Accordion Championships in Liverpool and won the under ten championship. He took first place in the polka solo, 10 and under, and second place in both the musette solo, nine and under, and grade one solo. The year sixes at Clapham School are raising money for a trip to London. As part of this, they have organised a bring and buy sale on May 15. They are looking for any unwanted books, clothes, games and toys. If you do have anything, please drop it into school before May 14.

Church news: There will be a quiet day at Parcevall Hall on Tuesday. If you are interested, sign the list in church or contact the vicar for more information. There will be a rogation and pet service in St James’ Church, Clapham, next Sunday, May 10, beginning at 11am. Also, on the same day, there will be a primrose walk. Participants should meet at 3pm and the walk will be followed by afternoon tea at Wood Farm.

Scandimoot: Scandimoot, a group of around 70 musicians and dancers from Norway, will be visiting the area over the Bank Holiday weekend. They will be using Clapham Village Hall as their base and will be running dance workshops on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. There will also be instrumental workshops at Ingleborough Hall. Scandimoot will perform on Saturday at Settle’s Victoria Hall from 8pm and this will be followed by a dance. On Sunday there will be a free concert at 1.15pm in St James’ Church, Clapham.

Newby Methodists: Newby Methodist Church invites everyone to take a break and join members for coffee. They meet every Thursday between 10am and 11am.

Bethel Chapel: Bethel Chapel is holding a Celebration of Our Local Community on Monday between 10am and 4pm. The event - at the chapel - will include a display of village activities as well as refreshments. The money raised will go towards Cancer Care and Parkinson Society.

Coniston Cold Young Farmers: Last Tuesday, Coniston Cold Young Farmers met at Church Farm in Kirkby Malham. Members judged dairy cows and chocolate cake. Churches Together: A united service will be held in All Saints’ Parish Church at 10.30am on Pentecost Sunday, May 24. The next meeting of Churches Together will be at 6.30pm on Thursday, May 28, in the Centenary Room of the New Road Community Centre. A two-course meal will be followed by a talk from the Rev Rod Geddes, recently retired vicar of Gargrave.

St Peter’s: The 10.30am service on Sunday will be led by Wendy Fryer. The church garden, which was cleared by a Community Payback team during the winter, now needs plants, so a “bring a plant” coffee morning has been arranged for 10am to noon on Monday. Visitors can either pay for a coffee as usual or bring a plant or two. There will also be a cake stall and bring and buy stall. Please note that there will be no exercise class on Monday. The next church lunch will be held from noon to 2pm on Wednesday, May 13. All proceeds will go to Christian Aid.

At St Mary’s Church, there will be an all-age worship at 9.30am followed at 11.15am by a communion service. At 6pm, there will be the annual service of thanksgiving for departed family and friends. Also on Sunday, tea and scones will be served from 2pm in the parish rooms and on the Church Green as the Tour de Yorkshire passes through the village. The church will also be open to visitors.

Village Pump: The Village Pump - the over 50s group - will meet in the lower hall at Farnhill Methodist Church on Wednesday from 2pm to 3.30pm.

Parish Council: Farnhill Parish Council was told an email had been received from a member of the public regarding parking issues on Main Street and complaining that both floors of the institute had been booked on the same evening. The clerk is to reply stating the council has no authority to deal with parking problems and the institute is run by a separate committee. Highways has responded to the parish council’s request for signing on the approach to Kildwick roundabout from Skipton direction, warning of traffic approaching from the left. It says it cannot see any way of signing or marking this. With regard to opening the bus route into Kildwick to other vehicles, it says that some residents have expressed concerns about the effect this would have on the village. The county council has said it will not be erecting signs warning of pedestrians crossing at the A629 Cononley Crossroads once an refuge is installed in May or June. Highways has assessed Main Street for a further grit bin. It reached a score of 80, but it needs to be over 100 to qualify. The parish does have the option to fund a grit bin for the location. The matter may be reviewed again in late autumn. The parish council has appointed Andrew Bosman as its new internal auditor. The receipts, payments account and supporting statement for year ended March 31 were approved by the council. Kildwick Parish Meeting has responded to a request for permission to have a light near the steps at Parson’s Bridge and said the site would appear suitable. However it has asked for letter of agreement confirming that Kildwick would not be liable for any installation, running or maintenance costs. A request has been put forward that when the track at Arbour Top is repaired, it is made slightly wider. The parish council had no objections to the proposal. Members were pleased with the number of volunteers who gave up their Sunday to help with the planting. The clerk is to write to the contractors who began the clearance work at Lower Arbour to ask them to remove the debris so the planting work could be completed. Farnhill Parish Council has been provisionally awarded a community grant from CDC for the Arbour Project. The parish council thanked Cllr R Bramley for the excellent job he had done with the website. It had 440 hits from February to March and 986 hits from the March to April. A representative from the asset inspection team at the Canal & River Trust met with the clerk. He confirmed the retaining wall leading to the road tunnel was being monitored and any work would be prioritised within the works programme. He is also to suggest that a top latch be fitted to the gate at Redmans Bridge to increase the likelihood of it closing. He confirmed that CRT was aware of the condition of the deck of Redman swing bridge and was prioritising repairs. Craven District Council is to introduce collection points for wheelie bins in Newby Road, Mary Street, back of Mary Street and South View, Farnhill. The parish council will next meet in Kildwick and Farnhill Institute on Tuesday at 7.30pm and all residents are welcome.

Institute talk: On Friday, well-known speaker and local historian Ian Dewhirst entertained a packed audience at the Kildwick and Farnhill Institute when he talked about the Yorkshire Home Front in World War Two. The event was organised by the Farnhill and Kildwick Local History Group and raised about £200 towards institute funds.

Primary school: For making the most progress in their reading during the spring term, certificates were awarded to Will Clay, Honey Kaup-Samuels, Tom Birkett-Bentley, Hattie Black, Dylan Sampson, Megan Hird, Corey Croft and Oliver Brummitt. Congratulations go to Nell Shepherd, Bailey Pears, Presley Pears, Phoebe Oliver, Hannah Chapman and Lottie Oliver who took part in the Easter service at St Alkelda’s. Matthew Garth, Ethan Halliday, Will Clay, Nell Shepherd, Amy Simpson, Tom Birkett-Bentley, Joel Monks and Freddie Parsons took part in the North Craven football tournament. They all played well, drawing one game, losing one game and winning three games. Year six pupils joined contemporaries from Rathmell, Long Preston, Hellifield, Thornton-in-Craven and Greatwood to take part in 12 different citizenship sessions as part of the Craven Young Citizen and Crucial Crew Day. They thoroughly enjoyed the range of experiences. The school recently welcomed storyteller Alia Alzougbi, who introduced pupils to aspects of Arabic and Islamic culture through her stories and games. Every class enjoyed the visit and gained a great deal from it.

Glusburn Women’s Institute: As from May, Glusburn and Cross Hills Women’s Institute is moving its meeting place to Cross Hills Social Club. The meetings will still be held on the first Tuesday of every month at 7.30pm. During the April meeting, Patricia Clough spoke about the joys of being involved with Bingley Little Theatre. Gun Club: Penyghent Gun Club met in Horton Quarry for its recent members shoots. S Bamber was the marshal for the first shoot which was a 25-bird down-the-line competition. K Humphrey was the winner with 74 points, second was S Bamber with 60 points and third was P Fox with 58 points. K Humphrey was the marshal for the latest shoot. The winner was R Bold with 77 points, second was K Humphrey with 74 points and third was K Iball with 62 points. R Carr was the winner of the pool shoot. The next two shoots will be against Arncliffe Gun Club. The first will be in Horton Quarry on Sunday, May 17, at 6pm. Members willing to help set up the shoot should meet at the venue at 5.30pm. The return shoot will be held at Arncliffe on Sunday, May 24, at 6pm.

There will be a car boot sale at the iCentre on May 24 from 8am to 2pm. Easter Bingo was a successful evening, with many young people taking part. Old People’s Welfare jumble sale is on May 23. There will be a stand to promote defibrillator awareness in the village. St Mary’s Church has won a second Eco Congregation award. The Meet and Make group have raised £82 for the Church Roof Fund. The Theatre Group jumble sale made £537 and its annual general meeting is at the Top Club on May 14 at 8pm. Chapel-le-Dale Events Committee has donated £100 to the Splash Zone from domino evenings held during the winter. Members of the Ingleton Village Centre Action Plan are looking at ways to optimise the potential of Riverside Park. They would like the views of residents and visitors and there is a questionnaire on cravendc.gov.uk/haveyoursay or you can meet Fiona on Sunday in the park and on Tuesday, May 12, in the library in the morning and in the park during the afternoon. Next week’s meeting is a “talk and bash” at the River Lune.

Long Preston Heather Thomas-Smith, 01729 840113 May Day: Long Preston will hold its 45th annual May Day celebrations on Saturday. Activities will begin on the Maypole Green at 12.30pm with a procession leaving the school at 12.45pm. The children of Long Preston School have been working hard on their traditional country and Maypole dances and performances will begin around 1pm, following the crowning of the new May Queen, Hannah Glossop. After the dancing, stalls and carnival attractions will be on The Green. There will be a circus skills workshop for children (participation is free) and plenty of games, rides and activities. A barbecue on the green and cream teas, provided by the WI in the village hall, should help keep the energy going whatever the weather. Many village groups and organisations will be represented and the Heritage Committee will be showcasing a real archaeological dig, so do come along and support them.

Big Dig: On Saturday, on Main Green, the Big Dig will start with a demonstration pit. Everyone is invited to see and also participate if they want. The Big Dig itself, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, will follow over the next three weekends, starting at 9.30am each Saturday, meeting in the village hall.

Kwezana link: Pupils in Kwezana have been highlighting some of the problems which are found in their country but are much rarer in the UK. One such issue is that of falling victim to human trafficking, as this has been very much in the news in South Africa following arrests in the area.

Housing bus: The Yorkshire Housing bus will be in Whitefriars car park between 10an and noon every Tuesday, offering a range of free advice. Next week, the focus will be on employment support issues and on May 12 there will be information on saving money and saving energy.

Guided walks: A number of walks are taking place this weekend as part of the Ride2stride festival. These include family friendly walks. On Saturday, there will be an eight-mile moderate walk from Horton to Ribblehead, departing from the station at 11.54. On Sunday, there will be a seven-mile walk circular walk in the Horton area leaving Horton-in-Ribblesdale at 10.19. Please note that although these walks are family-friendly, they are not suitable for prams or buggies. Longer walks are also planned with a 17-mile strenuous Ribblehead circular walk on Saturday, leaving Ribblehead at 10.17 and a moderately strenuous 10-mile route from Ribblehead to Horton-in- Ribblesdale on Sunday, leaving Ribblehead at 10.27. Victoria Hall: Tomorrow, there is a return to Settle by Taking Stock Productions with a performance of Godfrey’s Last Stand. This is free entry with an opportunity for donations on exit. On Saturday, the hall hosts the best in Scandinavian music with the annual visit of Scandimoot and, on Sunday, the First Sunday Folk evening features Megson. The Celtic Fiddle Festival takes to the stage on Monday. There will be a ceilidh next Saturday, May 9, with Mike Harding and the hall house band. For details and tickets, contact 01729 825718 The Folly: Tomorrow, at 7pm, there will be talk by Fr Paul Hypher on Hardy VC: the compassionate hero. This will tell the story of Rev Theodore Bailey Hardy VC DSO MC. Headmaster of Bentham Grammar School and vicar of Hutton Roof, Mr Hardy was sent as an Army chaplain to France in December 1916, soon gaining the respect of the soldiers. He was fatally wounded on October 12, 1918, and died at Rouen hospital. He was the most highly decorated non-combatant of the First World War. Tickets cost £7 and are available from 01729 822893. The museum has two new exhibitions.1915: Reality Hits Home continues the World War One theme from last year and looks both at life on the home front in North Craven and daily life for the men and women serving abroad. The second exhibition is A Community Skill: the History of the Burton-in-Lonsdale Potteries.

Coffee morning: Settle Amateur Operatic Society invites everyone to join members at The Old Courthouse on Saturday for coffee, cakes and a chat. The event will run from 10am to 12.30pm.

Charity dance: The next charity dance will take place at St John’s Church Hall on Saturday. It will run from 8pm to 11.30pm and funds will go to Settle Scouts. Participants are asked to confirm attendance by contacting 01729 823259 by tomorrow.

Flower festival: A flower festival on the theme of Memories will take place at Holy Ascension Church over the Bank Holiday weekend. Programmes cost £2 and there will be refreshments available throughout. There will be a preview evening tomorrow and then the church will be open from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and Monday and from 11.30am to 3pm on Sunday with a songs of praise service at 4.30pm.

Swimming pool: A 70s, 80s & 90s disco will be held at Settle Social Club on Sunday to raise much-needed funds for the town’s swimming pool. The event will run from 7.30pm to midnight.

Book fair: A second-hand book fair will take place from 10 am to 4pm on Monday at Victoria Hall.

Race night: Old-fashioned wooden horse racing followed by a disco will be enjoyed at a fundraising event in aid of Freda’s Playgroup and Giggleswick Primary School at Settle Social Club next Saturday, May 9. Tickets cost £2.50 from either organisation or £3 on the door. The first race is at 7.30pm.

Photographic Group: Settle Photographic Group will meet at Townhead Court on Monday, May 18, at 7.30pm. The first half of the evening will be a gallery on the theme of Close Up Photography. The second half will be a talk by Margaret Smith on the subject of Size Matters.

Christian Aid Week: Volunteers are required to assist with a house-to-house collection for Christian Aid week in the area during the week of May 10 to 16.. Anyone able to assist is asked to contact Sally Waterson on 01729 822311. There will also be a coffee evening at St John’s Church Hall on Wednesday, May 13, from 7pm to 8.30pm. There will be refreshments, a cake stall, plant and gardening stall, and a bring and buy stall. Donations for the stalls would be gratefully received. The main focus for this year’s collection is to help women in Ethiopia to buy a cow to give them an income.

Young Farmers: Silsden with Skipton Young Farmers met for a forms meeting at Draughton Village Hall. Afterwards, members distributed leaflets for the 11th annual club show at Niffany Farm on June 28. There is no meeting next week due to the Bank Holiday.

Tour celebrations: The Tour de Yorkshire will pass through Silsden on Sunday. The Methodist Church will hold a special service at 9.30am and from 11am to late afternoon, the race will be shown on the big screen. Refreshments will include Yorkshire puddings and there will be some stalls.

Coffee and cakes: The next Coffee, Cakes and Camaraderie coffee morning will be held on Saturday at the Methodist Church. There will be all the usual stalls, bacon sandwiches and homemade cakes. The event will run from 9.30am to 11.30am.

Gala queen: Calling all prospective gala queens, rosebuds and pageboys. Are you aged five or over, a Silsden resident and available throughout the summer to visit local galas? Civic Society: The Civic Society will hold its final meeting of the season at the Methodist Church on Thursday, May 14, when Rod Fisher will give a talk entitled the Great Care Home Scandal. Doors open at 7pm with the talk commencing at 7.30pm.

Proms fundraiser: The Proms on the Farm team will hold a Grand Charity Event featuring the Big Bang playing live music from the 60s at Sunnybank Social Club next Friday, May 8, at 8.30pm. Admission will be £6 and tickets are available from Twiggs Newsagents or on the door. Proceeds to Sue Ryder Manorlands and the church.

Skipton Holy Trinity: Everyone is invited to today’s Happy Hour for a chat and a coffee between 11am and noon in the Church Café. This is particularly arranged for those who are living alone, but all are welcome. On Saturdays and weekdays - including Bank Holiday Monday - Morning Prayer takes place at 9am and Evening Prayer at 4pm. Check the church gate notice boards for any variation. On Saturday, special healing prayers will be said at 10.30am and the parish communion service at 9.45am on Sunday will also include healing ministry. Sunday’s services start at 8am Holy Communion, with the popular All in Church worship for families at 11.30am and Evensong at 6pm. Toddle into Church, for the tots and their carers, is held at 2pm on Tuesday and mid-week Holy Communion will take place on Wednesday at 10.45am.

Women’s Institute: Skipton with Stirton and Thorlby WI welcomed Professor Mike Dixon, who gave a talk on the growth of Ilkley. It first developed as a spa, with a water cure consisting of drinking water from Rombalds Moor and bathing in the icy waters. Nearby, at Ben Rhydding, was the first purpose-built hydro in the UK. Reports were given of the spring council meeting at Leyburn and the institute’s visit to Hetties where a midday meal was enjoyed. The next meeting on May 19 will vote on the resolution about the need for long-term care, which will be debated at the national annual general meeting at the Royal Albert Hall on June 4. If passed, the resolution will put pressure on the new government to legislate on the matter.

Oddfellows: CAMRA will present the Three Links Club with its award for best club of 2015 at 1.30pm on Saturday. In the evening, Frank will host his music quiz night from 8pm. Steeton Car boot sale: The Friends of Airedale will hold their next car boot sale on Sunday. Sales take place in the west car park on the first Sunday of the month from April through to September. There is free parking for buyers and all proceeds will go to the Friends.

Sutton-in-Craven Women’s Institute: On Monday, Sutton WI enjoyed a painting demonstration by Derek Stansfield. He amazed members by transforming a sheet of paper to an original watercolour of a snow-clad mountain and river. The group is looking forward to its annual trip to Keswick on Tuesday, May 12. Tour celebrations: The Tour de Yorkshire will pass through Sutton-in-Craven on Sunday - and, to coincide with the race, a fundraising event will be held in Sutton Park from 11am. Attractions will include bouncy castles, trampolines, face painting, mega slide, assault course, tombola, hook-a-duck, treasure hunt, balloons, penalty shootout, raffle and food stalls. In addition to the professional race, a mass participation cycling event is taking place in advance of the main race. Sportive cyclists will be arriving in South Craven between 8am and 1pm.

Park pass: The new season pass to Kilnsey Park Estate is available and provides unlimited visits. Attractions include children’s entertainment, fishing, walks, trails, a trekking centre, adventure playground and woods.

Wigglesworth Community centre: Bless Em All was a fantastic trip down memory lane for the packed audience. Everyone enjoyed the show which was funded through Rural Arts and the local council. Zumba is usually on Thursday at 7.30pm but polling takes place at the Old School next Thursday so it will be having a week off. Bacon Butty mornings are held every Saturday from 11am to 1pm.
