HIGH A-level success in Craven has been mirrored across North Yorkshire with a big proportion of students receiving top grades and high average point scores.

The county has consistently been in the top 15 per cent of authorities nationally for A-level success in past years and it is expected to maintained that position as schools have continued the very high standards of previous years.

North Yorkshire sends an above average proportion of students to university, including the prestigious top third of high performing higher education institutions.

In addition, the county council, through the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), promotes the apprenticeship route, so widening choices post-A-level, for young people looking to make the right choices for a future career.

The LEP is currently running a programme to support higher level apprenticeships, which are suitable for people who have completed A-levels and which provide on-the-job training that leads to a degree-level qualification.

County Councillor Arthur Barker, North Yorkshire’s Executive Member for Schools, said: “These outstanding results for the county mean that our young people are in a very good position to take up the higher education and training places of their choice. They can take the next step in their future lives, confident that they have a wide range of options."

The county’s schools have systems of support in place to help students who might have missed their first choices gain alternative places through the university clearing system, or to help them look for alternative paths into employment, apprenticeships or training.

An apprenticeship recruitment event where people can meet employers, training providers, current apprentices and careers advisers will be held in York on August 18. Email york.apprenticeships@york.gov.uk or call 01904 551971 for more details.
