The organisers of Horton-in-Ribblesdale gala awoke to superb weather on Saturday for the staging of the 36th annual village event.

Penyghent was resplendent as it bathed in sunshine and a light breeze created a near perfect temperature for the 150 athletes who would later scale its heights.

The colourful procession was led through the village by the talented South Steel Band, from Leeds, and the opening ceremony was conducted by Michael Cardus, of Lafarge Aggregates in Helwith Bridge.

He crowned the gala princess, 16-year-old Emily Summersgill-Smith, who was attended by her younger sister Molly, Victoria Johnson and Emma Dunkley.

The fancy dress entrants were introduced by compere Kelly Arkle. The Chris and Jean Sutcliffe Cup for the best fancy dress entrant under seven was won by brothers Sam and Jack Bloom with Spongebob and Patrick.

The Walter Sutcliffe trophy for the best overall entry was awarded to Gemma Maudsley and friends for their Wizard of Oz, while Horton WI won the trophy for the best float.

Locals and visitors alike were impressed by the antics of birds from The Hawk Experience, based in Horton-in-Ribblesdale. A demonstration was given from the main ring and vultures, a bald eagle and an eagle owl were seen in flight.

The children of Horton school entertained with their country dancing, and those with energy left also joined in with the children's sports.

The Penyghent fell race, organised by Settle Harriers, was won by Andy Peace, of Bingley Harriers, pushing the winner of the past three years, Kendal's Craig Roberts, into third position. Settle Harriers runner Jessica Cunliffe took third position in the ladies race.

Attractions on the gala field included stalls and games, the Kirkby Lonsdale alpacas, plus representatives from the fire and rescue service and the Army.

The successful afternoon was completed by a duck run organised by Horton-in-Ribblesdale school.

The winning duck belonged to Joe Handy and the event raised £380 for school funds.
