AGE Concern is developing a phone befriending service for elderly people in Skipton and South Craven but needs volunteers to man the lines.

The scheme will involve people providing regular telephone support to isolated or lonely older people.

Volunteers are welcome from any age or ability and, due to the flexible nature of telephone befriending, the volunteer can make telephone contact from their own home, without any expense to themselves.

They would be asked to give anything from 10 minutes to an hour a week and will receive training and regular support.

Over the past two years Age Concern's local co-ordinator Hillary Stoddart has managed to raise £300,000 in additional income for the area's older people.

She is now hoping, with the help of others, she can help even more isolated and lonely people.
