Cricketing legends came together to commemorate the life of Fred Trueman, with the launch of the Fred Trueman Statue Appeal.

Friends and family of the late, great Mr Trueman gathered at Leeds railway station to unveil a commemorative train in his name.

The first miniature version of the statue to be placed on Skipton High Street was also unveiled.

The Yorkshire and England fast bowler lived near Gargrave and his family wanted his statue to be placed in his adopted home town.

Northern Rail, in partnership with Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Craven District Council, is leading the appeal to raise money for the statue, as well as to support arts and grass roots sports initiatives for children across the North.

Funds will be raised through donations and the sale of limited edition maquettes - miniature versions of the statue - that will be produced by renowned Yorkshire sculptor, Graham Ibbeson, who created the celebrated statue of Eric Morecambe doing the sunshine dance. The maquette collection, which includes resin and bronze versions as well as a smaller pewter model, is available from www.fieryfred.net and www.grahamibbeson.net.

Prices are £160 for the resin, £3,500 for the bronze, and £64.95 for the pewter maquette.

"It was wonderful that so many of Fred's friends and cricketing colleagues were able to share an incredibly proud day for me," said his widow, Veronica.

"The statue will make a fitting tribute to Fred's achievements and I'm delighted that the appeal will go on to encourage youngsters to get more involved in constructive activities such as cricket and art."

Fellow Yorkshireman and cricket fan Michael Parkinson, the television presenter, is backing the appeal.

He said: "Fred was a true Yorkshireman and a world class sportsman, so it's fitting that he is remembered in this way.

"Fred was an artist of the highest calibre in his own world. By supporting this fundraising effort, you will not only be helping to commemorate one of England's finest cricketers, but also helping to invest in the future of cricket and supporting a key community project."
