AN "off-grid" home in the middle of a Dales moor is the unlikely setting for a new online business.

Luvit Jewellery, founded by Annette Robinson, sells "a unique range of fashion jewellery" over the internet.

This is in spite of the fact that Boradshawe House at Hazlewood, where the business is based, has no services.

Something as simple as picking up and posting the mail involves travelling two miles down a dirt road, crossing a ford and opening and closing gates along the way.

The house is powered by wind and water turbines and heated by a solid fuel Aga.

There is a backup diesel generator, which is used "as little as often".

Annette decided to start her own business after moving to the Dales from Warwickshire, where she had a "stressful desk job".

After visiting several craft fairs she decided to sell jewellery, but had to overcome numerous obstacles to get her fledgling business off the ground.

Being an internet-based operation, a working phone line is essential, but when BT quoted £123,000 to install a landline, Annette realised another solution would have to be found.

She found the answer with a nearby community wireless network.

However, in order to receive a signal, Annette had to erect an electronic receiver. Initially it was powered by a truck battery, but when that proved unsuccessful a small wind turbine was fitted.

Annette said: "It's not too bad, but you can't always be sure that it will work all the time."

She has also had to fit a booster aerial so a mobile phone can be permanently fixed to a wall in the property.

Annette added: "I think you have to have the attitude for it, but we have all the mod-cons, such as computers, a cooker and television.

"I think Luvit represents a complete triumph in remote and environmentally friendly business and is a wonderful example of what can be achieved with a lot of perseverance."
