ADDINGHAM rector Andrew Tawn walked 42 miles in under 24 hours and raised £1,300 for charity.

Mr Tawn, rector of St Peter's Church, walked the Lyke Wake Walk, which crosses the North York Moors, to raise money for the Prostate Research Campaign UK.

The group of 10 walkers set off from just outside Osmotherley at dawn last Thursday and arrived at Ravenscar 15-and-a-half hours later.

Mr Tawn said: "Our group set off at about 3.30am to make the most of the long day. It was a beautiful dawn, watching the sun rise behind Roseberry Topping.

"We never stopped for longer than 20 minutes so our legs did not get the chance to stiffen up, and we reached the end at 7pm."

So far, Mr Tawn has raised £1,300 in sponsorship, collected mostly from his own congregation.

The group in total has raised around £20,000.

"Before I did the walk I had no idea so many men suffered from prostate cancer or other prostate problems," added Mr Tawn.

"Lots of people who have sponsored me have told me how they personally have been affected directly or indirectly. I've been amazed at people's generosity."

People can still support the charity by sending a cheque payable to Prostate Campaign Research UK to The Rectory, Low Mill Lane, Addingham, Ilkley, LS29 0QP, or visit www.justgiving.com/markrobinsonlykewake.
