YOUNGSTERS have pledged to help raise cash towards the £90,000 needed to build a skate park in Settle.

They have joined forces with Settle Town Council which has launched a fund-raising project.

To date, Craven district council has agreed to contribute £30,000, Settle Town Council has promised £20,000 from its own coffers and a similar amount will come from the Settle Middle School legacy.

The balance - £20,000 - is hoped to emerge from fund-raising by approaching local companies and other communities around Settle from where youngsters might use the skate park.

Other fund-raisers suggested included a market stall, a bucket collection and at the Christmas lights switch on.

Town Mayor, Donald Taylor said: "I'm delighted we're able to provide this much needed facility and I particularly welcome the support of young people - that they want to get involved and help fund raising.

"We've had lots of ideas from young people including fund raisers such as holding a baking stall and a car wash."

The Bond Lane play area in Settle had been agreed as the best location and it would involve the relocation of some equipment to make way for the project.

No definitive design had yet been decided and the council planned to select a company that could design and install the skate park. It was hoped to have it completed within 18 months to two years.

Broadly, the construction would mean moving the toddler play area into a new, nearby fenced site and the adult gymnasium equipment shifted to an area closer towards Ashfield car park and the Quaker Meeting House - subject to Craven council approval and the lease or transfer of the land.

The area is to be lit and fenced and a lighting assessment and specification would be commissioned and planning permission sought along with a tree assessment and root protection zone earmarked.
