THE 26th annual Skipton Music Festival got underway at Skipton Town Hall with an appeal for more voluntary help to reach its centenary.

Festival secretary, Jill Wright has made a plea for more volunteers to join the ranks and help the event reach its100 year landmark in 1922.

“Please consider joining our ranks. It’s just four years to our centenary and we’re hoping that we’ll reach that landmark,” she said.

“It’s by no means certain but with wholehearted support we just might make it to 2022 - so onwards and upwards.”

She was shocked to learn of the demise of the Bingley Robertshaw Festival which was a timely reminder of the thin ice on which all such festivals skated.

Festivals like Skipton’s were a huge benefit to the musical culture of the area they covered particularly when music and the arts were having such a difficult time in schools.

“Our volunteers give freely and generously of their time and talent. Without the help of volunteers and patrons we couldn’t function.

“But volunteer time can’t pay the ever-rising costs of the venue, hire adjudicators and all the other expenses we face.

“For that we rely on income from entry fees, day tickets and our generous sponsors and patrons,” she added.

Music Adjudicator was John Powell formerly head of choral music at Chetham’s School of Music who praised the hard-working team and was particularly impressed with the way the festival was integrated into the local music scene.
