THIS picture, another from the personal archive of Skipton’s ‘Mr Sport’ Roger Ingham, was taken in 1980 at Skipton’s Black Horse Hotel at an ‘International Sportsnight’ featuring several sporting greats.

Among them were Bradford boxer Richard Dunn, who had fought Muhammad Ali for the heavyweight championship of the world, along with local heroes like Burnley and England footballer Alan Stevenson, rugby league greats Neil Fox and Lewis Jones, and Olympic 400 metre medallist Peter Higgins.

International boxing stars attending included Kit Pompey, Gary Felvus and Tonga’s Johnny Halafiki. The event was held in memory of rising Skipton boxing star Richard Hirst, who had tragically died in a road accident, with proceeds going to the leukaemia unit at Leeds General Infirmary.

Roger remembers that the man in the middle of the front row is Ivor John Lawson, who had won the charity auction to sit there.
