A ‘STRAW poll’ carried out in Skipton indicates a sense of growing disquiet on the possible economic dangers of Brexit, says a new action group.

North Yorkshire for Europe asked shoppers and passers-by to place balls in trays marked ‘leave’, ‘don’t know’ and ‘remain’ to indicate their opinion on Brexit at two pavement polls at Victoria Square and Sheep Street on Saturday.

And there was a very substantial majority going voting for ‘remain’, said the group’s Richard Sadler, one of the organisers of Saturday’s event.

“No one could possibly claim this was in any way scientific, but there does seem to be a growing sense of disquiet, in North Yorkshire and across the country, as the actual implications of Brexit become increasingly clear,” he said.

“Quite a lot of people who said they had voted ‘leave’ also said they had changed their minds now.

“Younger voters especially do seem to be realising what this Brexit could mean for Britain in everyday terms. Farmers, too, as far as we can gather, are also expressing growing levels of unease.”

This was the third poll carried out by the group in the county, with ‘voters’ in Harrogate and Ripon expressing broadly similar views to those in Skipton, he added.

Volunteers also handed out leaflets and asked people to sign up for the ‘Peoples Vote Campaign’, which calls for a referendum on whatever Brexit deal the Government comes up with in the autumn.

Mr Sadler added: “No one voted to make ourselves poorer yet contrary to what we were led to believe at the time of the referendum, that is the course we are set upon. All we are saying is that now e know more about what brexit actually means the the people - not politicians - should be allowed to have the final say.”

Pictures of the Skipton result were shared on social media and will be used to lobby Skipton and Ripon MP, Julian Smith.

Members of the group plan to take their campaign to Pateley Bridge on Saturday, June 9 and are planning more events around the county.
