A THUNDERSTORM hovering over Horton-in-Ribblesdale on Friday evening fortunately passed over in time for the 47th annual Gala on the Playing fields on Saturday.

Despite low cloud meeting runners over Penyghent - which this year had a slightly different and longer course - the day was a success and resulted in a new course record for the fell race, organised by Settle Harriers, due to its slightly modified route.

Bella Horsfall was the belle of the ball as she was handed the crown of Gala Princess from retiring princess Beth Richardson.

She was attended by Lexi Cross and Maddie Stirk.

The festivities were opened by Local GP Dr Colin Renwick and his wife, Jacqui, who also had the task of Judging the fancy dress.

The Walter Sutcliffe memorial cup was awarded to the overall winner, 10-year-old Ellie Forster who dressed as a Minion and overall runner up was seven-year-old Olivia Newhouse, as Gangster Granny, received the Chris and Jean Sutcliffe trophy.

The afternoons live musical entertainment was provided by the band Revival of the Fittest and the children were entertained by Mr Bubbles and his magic show. Children’s sports took place on the field and there were children’s games, stalls, a bumper raffle, tombola and cake stall.

For the motoring enthusiast there was a line up of classic cars to be admired.

The Penyghent fell race took place mid afternoon with slight changes made to the course to avoid erosion near the summit.

The slightly lengthened course meant the event’s winner, Leeds City AC runner Alasdair McLeod, 28, made a little bit of fell race history by setting a new course record for the new course of 48.10.

Local runner Jimmy Craig running for Barlick Fellrunners led 142 runners out West Yorkshire running clubs yielded the best results for top spots in the ladies’ race with Laura McCabe, of Otley, gaining first place and Alison Weston of Ilkley in second position and also first lady veteran.
