IN 1986 as now, World Cup fever was at its height - and these young football fans were keen to show their allegiance to England as part of the procession for Skipton Gala.
The pair holding the banner, at the procession start on Westmoreland Street, are Simon Mason, left, and Craig Savoury. Craig’s mother Julie Irving brought in the picture to the Herald office. Julie said: “Craig was aged nine and Simon was a bit older. They are dressed in the white shirts and blue shorts of England. I remember having a picnic in Aireville Park with the two lads and Simon’s mother Janet.” England fans still have good cause to remember the 1986 Mexico World Cup, but not in a good way - it featured the infamous ‘Hand of God’ goal by Argentina’s Diego Maradona which should have been disallowed but which helped to send England out of the competition in a 2-1 defeat. Maradona’s other goal, however, is still talked about today as one of the greatest ever scored!
