EVEN in 1974, when this picture was taken, actor and director Richard Attenborough was already a beloved British institution and a major international film star. He was happy to pull a pint in The Bay Horse, Cowling, which he was visiting as president of Muscular Dystrophy after the pub organised a pram race and came second in a national fundraising competition for the group. The picture was submitted by Sylvia Dolphin, who was then Sylvia Clues and is on the picture with her late husband Ian Clues. Both were licensees of the Bay Horse at the time. Sylvia said: “I remember he arrived in his own green Rolls Royce and his chauffeur was fined for speeding to get him there on time! He was a lovely man. Later we went on to an evening at the Keighley Variety Club, where he gave a speech that was absolutely spellbinding.”
