THE outgoing and long-time chairman of Kilnsey Show described this year’s 121st event a success.

Kilnsey Show chairman Robert Lambert, who farms at nearby Conistone, was pleased that everybody enjoyed themselves last Tuesday in fine weather conditions.

Robert, who is stepping down after 17 years as show chairman, added: “It’s a nice finale to my chairmanship. I couldn’t have asked for anything better.

Robert, who is now the president-elect for the 2020 and 2021 Kilnsey Shows, said: “I’m not as young as I used to be, and we need some younger blood to keep this show moving along.

“I will miss it, but I’ll still be around next year. As long as it’s a good show it doesn’t matter who’s running it.”

Chris Windle is the chairman-elect and he will take up the role next spring.

Dr Peter Whitehead, this year’s Kilnsey Show president, paid tribute to Robert.

“Robert is a great chairman,” said Dr Whitehead. “He’s very matter of fact, good with people and quietly gets on with it to get everything done.

“His wife Kathy (Kilnsey Show secretary) is a major asset. Kilnsey is like a theatre show when you look at all the people behind it who do all the organising and management. It’s beautifully done.

“It’s been extremely nice meeting old friends,” added Dr Whitehead, who lives in Skipton and had been the Kilnsey Show doctor for 25 years. “It’s been a good day out.”

Dr Whitehead’s sentiments were shared by many of the show-goers who were enjoying a day out.

Heather Howitt of Embsay said: “It’s a lovely traditional show in a beautiful setting. What more could you want?”

Bob Middleton on Embsay added: “There’s loads to see and do at the right price.”

One of the show’s supporters, Kathleen Carlisle of Cracoe, said: “I’ve been coming to Kilnsey Show all of my married life. I enjoy meeting people and seeing what they can produce. It’s also such a good show for cattle and sheep.

Attending Kilnsey Show for the first time, Sue Duncan and Linda Copeman, both of Skipton, watched as their friend, Deborah Hillan of Embsay, climbed into a John Deere tractor decorated with the North Yorkshire Police logos.

Deborah, a police officer, said: “It’s my big day out before I go back to work.”

Jane Parkin of Silsden also attended Kilnsey Show for the first time.

“I’ve been want to come to this show for years and years,” said Jane, who was admiring the Highland cattle. “These are beauties, aren’t they?”

Stuart and Sally Hutchison came from Selby to take in Kilnsey Show.

Sally said: “We’ve been here a few times. It’s a nice, small and friendly show.”

Graham Wells of Kelbrook and Ian Swire of Burnley drove their vintage tractors to Kilnsey Show, where they were part of the parade in the main show ring.

Graham, who showed off his Dexter 1961 which he bought six years ago, said: “I started doing the Kelbrook Tractor Run nine years ago, so I thought why don’t I buy a vintage tractor and do it up.”

Ian bought his Ford 4610, a 1986 model, just after Christmas.

“It had been stuck in a barn for 14 years, so I tarted it up and have been taking it to all of the shows.”

John Dowbiggin of Eastby was proud to show a 1957 Ferguson FE35 Gold Belle, an old tractor which was found in a field in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, and was restored by both John and Iber John Lawson.

Michael and William Oldfield from Gisburn showed the Supreme Dairy Champion at Kilnsey,

The cow, which has an excellent back pedigree, was also reserve champion at Western Holstein Club Show in Cheshire this year.

John Stephenson of Bordley was the Supreme Beef Champion at Kilnsey, showing a home-bred Parthenais-British Blue cross heifer, which also won its class at the Great Yorkshire Show this year.

“It’s brilliant,” said John. “It’s taken a lot of hard work, but we’ve now won this trophy two years on the bounce.”

Charles Marwood of Whenby won the Supreme Sheep Champion for the third time in four years.

Charles said the home-bred shearling ewe has “great size, is very correct and tight skinned, but is full of meat.”

She was sired by former Great Yorkshire Show winning ram Foulrice Osprey.

The Shire horse supreme champion was Walter Bedford of Eskrigg, York with the three-year-old filly Eskrigg Deighton Lucy.

Bedford was also supreme champion last year with four-year-old mare Calypso.
