A children’s services boss has voiced her frustration over funding for a council to introduce a range of duties following a change in the law. North Yorkshire County councillor Janet Sanderson said the amount of money the authority had received to implement the Children and Social Work Act had left it “really compromised”. The legislation has introduced a raft of changes for local authority duties about looked-after children, local safeguarding arrangements, the regulation of children’s social workers and how children and young people are taught about sex and relationships. The funding for the new duties was based on how many additional hours work would be required. Cllr Sanderson said Government assessors concluded the extra burden on the council would be just £18,000. She said: “We don’t feel this is adequate funding for the new responsibilities that we are to undertake. We are really compromised here, but like always we are trying to cut our cloth according to the material.”
