A LARGE turnout of people including members of the Bradford branch of the Friends of Polish Veterans Association, attended a ceremony at Bradley Forge on September 23 where Polish pilots were killed 75 years ago.

The men died when their Wellington bomber crashed in the area during a training mission.

A memorial was erected at Bradley Forge along the Leeds to Liverpool Canal to honour the pilots by Craven residents Jim Hartley, of Bradley, and Peter Whitaker, of Cross Hills.

Mr Hartley died in 2012.

His widow, Kath, went along in her husband's memory to commemorate the anniversary.

"It was a lovely day with so many people attending. It was very touching," said Mrs Hartley.

Romana Pizon, chairman of the Bradford branch of the Friends of Polish Veterans Association said: "We thank Mrs Hartley for all the support she gave her late husband, Jim, in his efforts to commemorate the bravery of our men and to learn about the history of our country and the fate of the Polish people."

The ceremony was also attended by Polish scouts and members of the Polish consulate.
