BUDDING author Amelie Harper is celebrating after being named year three and four Yorkshire Young Writer of the Year.

Amelie, eight, a pupil at Earby Springfield Primary School, entered her story in the Broughton Hall Children’s Literature Festival competition.

The contest was open to schools throughout Lancashire and Yorkshire with two categories - for years three and four, and years five and six.

More than a hundred primary schools took part in the competition to write the short stories for the festival, which took place at the end of last month.

The school's Max Villiers, nine, and Freya Craddock, 10, also enjoyed success achieving second place in their respective categories.

Amelie was awarded overall winner of her age group at category at the evening presentation. Her story, along with the other prize winners, has been published and she also won a selection of books for her school.

Head teacher Dawn Liversidge said: "We are very proud of all our children. To be named Yorkshire Writer of the Year is a wonderful achievement. Reading is very important to us and children are encouraged to read at home and at school."
