THESE eager-looking chaps looking to bowl a maiden over are the players of Cowling Cricket Club, probably in 1960 or 1961.

The picture was among a selection brought in to the Herald office by Brian and Sylvia Dolphin, of Sutton-in-Craven - Brian is on the photograph, second from the right on the front row.

The other players are back row, from left, R Duxbury, D Taylor, T Whitaker, A Winstanley, B Pearce and S Wilkinson.

As well as Brian, on the front row are from left, D Hindle, ? Watson, B Davy and P Jones. Their professional Yorkshire brethren at this time included county and England legend Ray Illingworth, with Geoffrey Boycott just starting to make his mark. Cowling Cricket Club is, of course, still going strong at its Keighley Road ground in the shadow of Cowling Pinnacle and the Crag. Its senior teams play in the Craven Cricket League, while the juniors play in the Upper Airedale Junior Cricket League. Contributions for this feature are always welcome.
