SCHOOLCHILDREN and staff have been praised for their tireless efforts to help refugees - and recognised as the first 'School of Sanctuary' in Craven.

Glusburn Community Primary School was presented with a certificate at a special assembly by Fiona Protheroe, of Craven Development Education Centre. She was representing the chairman of Skipton Refugee Support Group, Charles Dobson.

Pupils and teachers have been raising money for Syrian refugees, donating clothes to newly arrived Syrians, donating library books to help children learn English, and making cards and bunting to welcome refugees into Leeds.

Lynn Ashton, the school's 'head of values and ethos' said: “Over the last three years the children learned so much about what life as a refugee is like.

"They have developed empathy and gained understanding through lessons, creating displays with their art work, assemblies and drama. "We were privileged to have Dianita Flores, a Bolivian refugee, tell us about her experiences.

"Our lead team of students - the 'UNICEF team' - have guided their peers throughout. We have had an enriching time on our journey and now we are thrilled to have been awarded School of Sanctuary."

Fiona Protheroe said that is encouraging more schools In Craven to become Schools Of Sanctuary. Contact her at fiona@cravendec.org.uk for more information.
