ARTIST David Ingham was inspired to paint a montage portrait of his uncle, Arthur Ingham, who died in November, 1917 while fighting in the First World War, after visiting the Tyne Cot Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery in Belgium.
Arthur Ingham, whose family lived in Devonshire Street, Skipton, was just 28 years old when he died in the third Battle of Ypres. He was a single man and the only one of his siblings who was old enough to take part in the war.
David, from Keighley, who attended Bradford Art College, where artist David Hockney was also a student, is a former pupil of Ermysted’s Grammar School, Skipton. Despite being expelled from the school for ‘disruptive’ behaviour, he has since been called upon to paint four of its former headmasters, Tom Ashworth, Graham Hamilton, David Buckroyd, and Marcellus ‘Bru’ Foster, all of which are on display in the school.
