LAST weekend’s Rugby League Grand Final saw Wigan beat Warrington 12-4 in a closely-fought game at Old Trafford. And 50 years ago it was Skipton-born and bred player David Jeanes who was scoring a match-winning try, in the sport’s Championship Final, as this picture, another from the collection of Skipton’s Mr Sport Roger Ingham, shows.

The former Skipton LMS player crashed over the line for Wakefield Trinity as they beat Hull Kingston Rovers in front of a capacity crowd - and a BBC TV audience of millions -at Leeds’ Headingley stadium to take the title.

David had also featured for Wakefield in that year’s Challenge Cup Final against Leeds at Wembley, famous as the Watersplash Final because of the dreadful conditions in which it was played - and for Wakefield’s Don Fox missing a last-minute conversion in front of the posts to hand Leeds an 11-10 victory.
