SETTLE’S pubic toilets are so dirty they can be smelt from the car park, according to a recent visitor to the conveniences.

The visitor who did not wish to be named, took r3ecent photographs from inside the gents’ toilet in Whitefriars Car Park complaining of the smell and condition and put them on Twitter.

Directing his tweet to Craven District Council which runs the facility he wrote: “It’s about time the public toilets in Settle got a bit of money spent on them. You you can smell it from the carpark. Smells absolutely vile and the state inside - no floor, locks, toilet paper. Been like it months. Lots of visitors use it.”

Since his tweet the Herald has learned the toilets are to be revamped.

Settle Town Council said issues with the toilets had been on the agenda for many months.

Chairman Councillor Dan Balsamini said: “We have been in discussion with Craven District Council about the issues to try and resolve the problem. The town council has had letters of complaint sent to us and we had asked CDC for the cleaning contract and information on how often the toilets should be cleaned however we are yet to receive this information.

“The floor in the gents toilets was lifted several months ago without replacement and the town has had them in this state for most of the summer which may not have left a good impression on the many visitors we have as well as our parishioners who have had to deal with issues surrounding toilets in Settle for many years.

“We want to continue to make Settle an amazing place to live, work and visit so we hope that these issues can be addressed promptly and a long term solution put in place.”

In response a spokesman for the district council said: “We are sorry that these toilets in Settle are not up to the standards we would like to provide for visitors. However, we are pleased to confirm that these toilets will be refurbished during November, with repairs to the roof, a new floor, upgraded cisterns and flushes, new toilet roll holders and replacement locks on doors. While the refurbishment is taking place there will be two portable toilets on site for members of the public to use.”
