A DISGRUNTLED ‘pot washer’ at the Rendezvous Hotel in Skipton had to be restrained by his work colleagues after he started verbally abusing guests, heard magistrates.

Kayne Hargreaves, 25, no longer had a job at the hotel after he swore at guests attending a wedding reception, threatened to stab people, and smash all the windows, the Skipton court heard on Friday.

Restaurant manager Carl Jones, in a statement read out in court, said staff had taken Hargreaves to the floor because he feared for the safety of the guests.

He had dismissed Hargreaves immediately following the incident on September 23, and had told him he would not be welcomed back.

Hargreaves had left work early after a broken washing machine meant he and one other member of staff had had to wash up by hand, leaving him feeling under pressure, the court heard.

He went home to Keighley Road, walked his dog and drank a bottle of gin and 10 cans of lager before returning at 2am to the hotel to sort out his working hours.

Hargreaves was told to go home and return when he was sober. He then proceeded to be rude to reception staff and to sweep items off the desk, smashing a glass vase and leaflet holder, together worth £10.50, and also push a plant holder over., said prosecutor, Katy Varlow.

She said Mr Jones said Hargreaves then marched over to some guests, who were still about following the earlier wedding reception and had abusive to them.

He shouted at one ‘what are you f*****g looking at’, and on being taken to the floor said he would ‘stab people’ and ‘smash all the windows’.

When he was later Interviewed by police, he said he had felt under pressure, had gone out for a cigarette and had then decided to go home.

He had felt embarrassed about walking out and had returned later, not wanting to be seen by anyone, he told police.

Hargreaves, who the court heard had previous convictions for criminal damage and being drunk and disorderly, admitted criminal damage and using threatening behaviour at the hotel.

He however denied saying he would stab people, claiming it was something he would never say, even when in drink, and also claimed that his father had paid the hotel for the damage he had caused.

Hargreaves, of Keighley Road, Skipton, was given a 12 month community order with six months alcohol treatment and up to 10 rehabilitation requirement days. He was also barred from entering the Rendezvous Hotel or its grounds for 12 months. He will also have to pay costs of £85 and a surcharge of £85.
