HUNDREDS of passengers relived the golden age of bus travel when vintage vehicles again plied routes around the Skipton area.

But they didn’t have to return to the days of pounds, shilling and pence to pay the fare - passengers travelled free for the day of the event, run by the Aire Valley Transport Group.

Vintage buses and coaches ran from Skipton Bus Station throughout the day, many on routes which were familiar with their various liveries decades ago, on what was the 13th Aire Valley Running Day.

Brian Stott, who along with Simon Winstanley provided our pictures, said: “Some of your older readers may remember the claret and cream bus (top left).

“It was known by people in Skipton and other areas of Craven as ‘The Colne Corporation’. The service to Skipton only ran on a Saturday and it used to travel along Broughton Road to get to town as the by-pass was not open, so it was not able to get to Gargrave Road. Readers may also remember the Ribble Buses ‘White Lady’ (top right) which is shown returning to Skipton Bus Station.

“It was the 1960s version of the X43 Service, now called ‘The Witch Way’ running through to Manchester.”

Organisers thanked everyone who had turned out to make the day a success.

Next year’s event will take place on Sunday, October 13.
