THREE women who went shoplifting to Skipton were later stopped by police in Harrogate with almost £900 of perfume, heard magistrates.

Sisters Donna Holmes, 38, and Sophie Holmes, 24, and Donna's 18 year old daughter, Macy Holmes, all from Bradford, were caught on CCTV carrying a large bag following reports of the theft of a substantial amount of perfume from Boots in the High Street, the Skipton court heard today (Friday).

A description of the women's car was passed to police and the Volkswagen Golf was later stopped on the A59 at Harrogate.

Sophie Holmes was driving, Donna Holmes was in the front passenger seat, and Macy Holmes was in the back, said prosecutor Melanie Ibbotson.

All the stolen items were recovered from the car where police also found a foil lined bag, which can be used by shoplifters to avoid store security.

All three women were interviewed by police and all declined to comment, said Miss Ibbotson.

All three admitted in court stealing £870.50 of perfume from Boots on September 15.

In mitigation, Mohammed Hussain, said although there had been some degree of planning, it had not been sophisticated and that there was no evidence that the foil bag had been used in the theft.

He said Donna Holmes had four children, with Macy being the eldest, and was struggling financially. Sophie Holmes, he said, was a mother of two and the victim of domestic violence.

All three had previous convictions for dishonesty, but Sophie Holmes was the most convicted and had previously been the subject of a community order for theft, the court heard.

A pre-sentence report on Sophie Holmes revealed she had saved £200 towards a birthday present for her daughter, and it had been stolen by her ex-partner, and she had wanted to replace the money.

She was given a 12 month community order with up to ten rehabilitation requirement days and 40 hours unpaid work.

Holmes, of St Christopher's Court, was also banned from driving for six months, after magistrates told her she had driven it to Skipton with the intention to steal. She will also have to pay costs of £85 and a surcharge of £85.

Donna Holmes and Macy Holmes, both of Abbotside Close, Bradford, were both given a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a surcharge of £20.
