Longstaffe’s Educational Foundation is a Bentham-based charity committed to supporting the education of the young people in the area. It originated with a £200 bequest by a Mrs Longstaffe of York in 1713.

The trustees award grants annually to young people up to the age of 25 to promote their educational endeavours.

The range of supported activities is considerable and help has been provided over the years in a variety of ways including extra tuition, books, and computers.

The Foundation operates on the basis that local young people are at the beginning of their passage through life and any enhancement of their education increases their potential.

The trustees, all committed local people, have in recent years set up various fundraising activities, such as the Christmas concert held in late November and the annual quiz night held in June. Both have become annual fixtures in Bentham’s social calendar.
