RETRO pop sensation Sonia will switch on Keighley’s Christmas lights on Sunday November 25 as part of a day of festive entertainment.

The singer, who had chart hits in the 1980s and 1990s, will be joined by Skye and Rubble from the popular children’s TV series PAW Patrol.

West End star Sonia will sing some of her biggest hits, like 1993’s Eurovision runner-up Better The Devil You Know, before pushing the plunger to switch on the lights.

Fans will also be the chance to have a VIP Meet & Greet with Sonia as part of a Facebook competition run by Keighley BID and the Airedale Shopping Centre.

Skye and Rubble will be in the shopping centre at various intervals between 10.30am and 3.30pm to meet and greet families. Also inside the centre will be Santa’s grotto, raising money for Dementia Friendly Keighley.

Centre manager Steve Seymour said: “The Christmas light switch on is always a big event for Keighley.

“Anthony Cotton was a huge hit last year and I’m sure with the appearance of special guest and music legend Sonia, it will be even bigger this year.

The Christmas Switch On, previously held on Bow Street, will now be held at Church Green, with crowds watching the stage for entertainment from local performers, and a selection of games and activities hosted by Pulse 1’s Mylo and Rosie.

The new location this year will also see the return of a firework display from Keighley company Optimum Fireworks in a stunning finale to the show at 4.30pm.

Paul Howard, manager of Keighley BID, said: “We’re looking forward to the highlight of our event calendar this year with all new firework display in the new location at Church Green.

“We would like to thank all our partners but particularly the Airedale Shopping Centre, Keighley Shared Church and Bradford Council for helping us to make this happen.”

Following the Christmas switch-on event, free parking will be back at the Airedale Shopping Centre every Saturday through December and late-night shopping leading up to the festive period.

There will also be Keighley BID’s Independents’ Campaign, giving people the chance to win up to £1,000 in shopping vouchers and five chances of winning £100 in vouchers.

The switch on will take place at 4.30pm and will be followed by a fireworks display.
