A SKIPTON man damaged the roller shutter door of business premises near his home and set off an alarm with his walking stick, heard magistrates.

Stuart Beattie, 52, was annoyed because of what he perceived as noise and disturbance coming from the premises of Marton Mills, Marton Street, the Skipton court heard on Friday.

The damage, which owners, Concept Textiles, estimated at £1,100, was discovered after the alarm was set off, the court was told.

Beattie, who admitted criminal damage at the premises on August 20, lived very closely to the business and had vented his irritation by hitting out the door and alarm.

In mitigation, John Mewies, said Beattie was a former soldier with the Royal Artillery and had also worked on oil rigs in Scotland, both of which occupations had left their mark on him.

Mr Mewies said Beattie hoped to be rehoused away from the area.

Beattie, of Sawley Street, was given a two year conditional discharge and ordered to pay compensation to the company of £200. He will also have to pay costs of £85 and a surcharge of £20.
