PUPILS from all four school of the Upper Wharfedale Federation took part in a WW1 parade to mark 100 years since the 1918 armistice.

The children dressed up in wartime outfits, from nurses and evacuees to airmen, infantrymen and school-children in flat caps. They took part in a variety of activities including a rationing and trench cooking workshop, code breaking, marching, singing World War 1 songs and learning ‘swing dancing’.

Just before half term, the pupils from all four schools also enjoyed a fascinating day together at Eden Camp at Malton. Here they had great fun learning about the wars, exploring the trench huts, seeing the military vehicles and taking aim with the wartime guns. Both events were organised as History Enrichment Days for the pupils of the Federation, to bring to life the children’s topic work this term on World War 1.

Chris Boxall, co-executive head for the Upper Wharfedale Primary Federation said: “Both the trip to Eden Camp and our World War 1 day have been fantastic opportunities for Key Stage 2 children from all our four schools to come together to learn more about life for those soldiers who served during the war and the impact on families and communities at that time”.

The Upper Wharfedale Primary Federation comprises Burnsall Primary School, Cracoe and Rylstone C of E Primary School, Grassington C of E Primary School and Kettlewell Primary School.
