SCHOOLCHILDREN in Craven have been busy boosting a charity which helps young people in Uganda to participate in sport.

Pupils at Threshfield, Austwick, Carleton and Embsay primary schools have been working with charity Kanga Sports, which was set up in 2013 to "inspire and educate" children through sport.

Pupils at the schools have held 'non-uniform days' to raise cash, donated school PE and football kits and written letters to Ugandan children describing their own lives in the UK.

As part of the project, pupils have taken part in PE and football sessions using balls made from wrapped up banana-leaves and vines.

Kanga Sports founder and former secondary school PE teacher Andrew Bode said: "Kanga Sports has created links with the charity JET, the Jinja Educational Trust.

"It aims to improve the education training and welfare of young people in Uganda so they can go on to acquire the necessary skills for a successful and fulfilling life.

"All the schools in Craven have been great, and the children really interested - and shocked - at using the banana-leaf balls.

"We our looking forward to our first trip to Uganda and hope that through the children of Craven we will be able to make a big impact on the lives of the children in schools and orphanages we visit in Uganda."

Andrew added that he was hoping to get more schools in Craven involved with the project.
