SALES OF second-hand goods at a Cowling church have raised £500 for the Samaritans’ winter work supporting vulnerable people.

New2U is a community venture run by seven volunteers that sells new and used unwanted items at St Andrews Methodist Church.

Pauline Hirons, the Samaritans’ local treasurer, said the generous donation would enable the charity to continue its work in Craven and the surrounding areas.

She said: “This time of year is often a time when vulnerable individuals feel most alone and isolated. Our volunteer listeners offer a vital and essential lifeline to many at a time of emotional need.”

New2U treasurer Andrea Moore said: “Since its beginning in 2013, New2U has raised upwards of £20,000 for charitable and good causes.

“Staffed and run entirely by volunteers, we open from 2pm to 4pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 10am to noon on Saturdays. We are pleased we are able to help Samaritans continue their good work in the area.”

New2U is appealing to local people for more donations of good-quality unwanted goods, and also new volunteers.
