A WEATHER warning for snow and ice has been issued for the Bradford district this weekend.

After snow was forecast for the district yesterday, the Met Office has now issed a yellow weather warning, lasting from midday on Saturday until 10am on Sunday.

It said: "Heavy snow and blizzards may develop across Scotland and northern England with a risk of freezing rain in places."

It is warning people to expect travel delays on roads, leaving some vehicles and passengers stranded, while there may be delays on cancellations to rail, bus and air travel.

Rural residents are also being warned they may be cut off due to the weather, and power cuts may also be caused by the snow.

Pedestrians are also being warned to take care while out and about, as there will be risk of injuries from slipping on icy surfaces, and black ice may also form on untreated surfaces.

The Met Office chief forecaster said: "There is a risk of snow developing with strong southeasterly winds affecting northern UK on Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning.

"The snow could be heavy at times, especially over hills where blizzards may develop, and is likely to drift in strong winds.

"Across northern England and southern Scotland, snow may turn to freezing rain above 200 to 300 metres leading to widespread ice developing on Saturday night.

"Two to five centimetres of snow is likely at lower levels, whilst higher ground could see 10-20 cm."

Due to the wind, with gusts of up to 30mph, the temperature will feel below freezing, so people are being told to wrap up warm when out and about.

Bradford Council has had its gritters out overnight this week, and they are expected to be out again over the weekend. Last week, it was announced Bradford Council has brought in ten new gritters to keep the district's roads clear this winter.
