SETTLE Movember Group’s charity party at Victoria Hall raised £1,190 for men’s health initiatives and raised awareness of three significant causes of male mortality.

The prize competitions for best real and false moustaches produced some exotic entries and a lot of laughs. In the interval there were brief talks on prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health. The night ended with the band Revolverlites getting the audience dancing.

Cllr Wendy Hull, Chair of Craven District Council and ward member for Settle, praised the local community involvement: “I would like to thank the organisers of this important and clearly effective event here in Settle. Nationally, men do tend to ignore health signs and symptoms that should be checked by health professionals.

"Clearly the support and engagement with local businesses has really reinforced the key messages and, I have no doubt, contributed to the success of Movember! Very many thanks to the organisers and I hope that such events will continue to be held locally at the very least annually.”

Martin Wild, of Settle Movember Group, said: “We wanted to wrap an important message up in a bit of fun as well as raise money, and we knew we had succeeded when both the band and audience were too exhausted to carry on partying!”

Simon Desborough, also of Settle Movember Group, said: “Our thanks also go to everyone who bought tickets and grew or wore false moustaches, Victoria Hall for all their help and Settle Health Centre for an informative display and leafets - this was a whole Settle community effort to raise nearly £1,200 from a memorable night.”

This event was made possible by the generous financial support of local businesses including Candelisa, Ribblesdale Land Rover, Goad Butcher, Best Tyres, Duncan Robinson Funeral Services, David Stubbs, Neil Wright, Settle Coal, Lay of the Land, and LJS Transport and many more. Most shops in Settle donated great raffle prizes and a number of restaurants and pubs had a special Movember dish from which they made a donation every time the dish was ordered.
