A COMPANY based in Skipton has been given the royal seal of approval for an innovative health product which has greatly improved the lives of hundreds of post-operative patients.

Trio Healthcare, of Gargrave Road, Broughton, has been presented with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the ‘Innovation’ category by the Duke of Kent for its silicone technology. This is used to help patients with bladder cancer, Crohn’s disease or colitis, who have abdominal ‘stomas’ - surgically created intestinal openings - deal with leakages. The firm’s Skipton staff travelled to Buckinghamshire for the award ceremony at its Great Missenden offices.

The award was presented to Lloyd Pearce, managing director of the company.

The Duke discussed Trio’s pioneering technology with the team and spoke with patients - ostomates - whose lives have been transformed by the company’s work.

He commented: “Their dedication to healthcare innovation is improving the lives of ostomates everywhere – they are very worthy winners.”

The Duke also spoke to several ostomates, who told him how using the firm’s silicone technology had improved their lives.

Mr Pearce said: “It’s an honour to receive this award for our contribution to the advancement of ostomy care.

“We are so proud knowing that our product is making a real difference to the lives of ostomates, who feel less socially anxious now that bag leakage is no longer a concern.”

Speaking after the announcement of the award earlier in the year, Mr Pearce explained: “Due to the stigma and embarrassment associated with body waste and bag leakage, a person’s social life and well-being is dependent on the ostomy adhesive and bag’s performance.

“Too many people around the world were suffering from leakage and irritated skin, so as a company we have made it our mission to provide an alternative solution. Our products offer reassurance and comfort.”

By modifying the chemical make-up of the silicone gel, the firm says it has developed a secure but comfortable solution that allows the skin to breathe normally whilst maintaining a secure connection.
