A DROUGHT permit to allow more water to be pumped from the River Wharfe has been approved by the Environment Agency.

The permit will allow Yorkshire Water to pump more water from the river near Addingham to ease the pressure on Grimwith Reservoir.

The agency has reported that three wet weeks in December produced above average rainfall for Yorkshire for the month.

The majority of rivers were experiencing flows that would normally be expected for December and reservoir stocks were only seven per cent below the long term average at the end of the month.

Due to the rain, Yorkshire Water has decided to withdraw the drought permit application for its South Area reservoirs in the River Don catchment.
