WE are again indebted to ‘Skipton’s Mr Sport,’ Roger Ingham, for this evocative picture, taken at Hebden Sports on August Bank Holiday Monday in 1982.

Hebden Sports has always been about more than its famous foot races, with all sorts of fun contests like pillow fights, high jumping and welly-throwing on the agenda.

Here we see Skipton’s Keith Summersgill, one of the leading local fell runners and athletes of the time, on his way to a comprehensive victory in the wheelbarrow race - and being ‘driven’ by his wife Sylvia!

Roger says he does not know who any of the other wheelbarrow competitors were, but with Hebden Sports traditionally attracting many visitors and tourists from outside the area, thinks they may be, in Yorkshire dialect, ‘off cumd’uns’ - or people with roots elsewhere.
