STEETON’s historic street lamp has been taken away for refurbishment in readiness for its move to a prominent place in the village.

Steeton-with-Eastburn Parish Council is seeking permission for the JE Webb Sewer Gas Destructor Lamp to be placed on land at the corner of Mill Lane.

The council last year agreed to fund the renovation of the lamp, which was originally hidden on a track running alongside Chamney’s Pie Shop near the junction of Station Road and East Parade.

The structure has been taken apart, with its column, mantle and lamp fitting being sent to specialists in various parts of the country.

When the lamp has been put back together, it will be fitted with LED lights that give the same effect as the original gas light.

Parish council chairman David Mullen said: “It will look like an authentic gas lamp.”

The Destructor Lamp originally burned off dangerous methane gas from the sewers, but was replaced with electricity many years ago.

It has offered to Steeton-with-Eastburn Parish Council by Bradford Council which had decided to provide a modern street lamp at the location.

One of few still in existence across the UK, the lamp is likely to receive Grade II listed structure status when it is re-erected.
